MirrorNG as a backup solution
One of the primary goals of the MirrorNG project is to provide a backup solution. A good backup system is essential to keeping your important documents safe from hardware failures as well as accidental deletion. Because if this, many backup systems exists, but we believe our backup system provides you with several benefits that we perceive as severely lacking in competing products.
Advantages of using MirrorNG
The benefits of our product are as follows:
- Plug-and-play MirrorNG needs no special permissions on the machine that the docbase is located on, nor on the underlying database. MirrorNG accesses the docbase through its API interface and only requires an administrator login to the docbase to do so.
- Backups while you work MirrorNG does not require the docbase to go down for backups. This is important for multinationals with offices in all time zones that cannot afford the docbase ever to go down.
- Incremental MirrorNG works incrementally. This way, if the connection to the docbase is lost, or the docbase suffers unforeseen downtime, then MirrorNG will automatically reconnect and resume where it left off. There is no such thing as lost work in MirrorNG.
- Decreased risk of data loss MirrorNG backs up any changes shortly after they have happened. This severely reduces the risk of data loss. By comparison, nightly backups risk losing all data and content inserted in the docbase during the day if the docbase has a hardware failure in the evening before the backup. In contrast, MirrorNG risks losing data and content only if it is deleted immediately after adding it. Otherwise, it should take MirrorNG only a few minutes to pick up on the changes and add it to the backup. The following schematic illustrates this.
- Prompt troubleshooting A nightly backup system usually runs when the systems are unmonitored and only in the morning does one notice that the backup has not completed or run at all for some reason. Because the system cannot go down for backup during the day, all the new data of the day before is not in backup and runs extra risk of being lost. In contrast, MirrorNG works when people work on the system and thus when a sysadmin is present to tackle any problems as they come up.
